It’s Time To Organize That Bookshelf

March 30, 2017 by Illinois Valley Clean Team

organizing a bookshelfI love bookshelves. There are houses that have just one and others that have several. The bookshelf once had a clear and concise purpose…store your books, but in this digital world it’s become much more. If you’re anything like me, the bookshelf has become a catchall for anything that simply needs a place, but it’s time to clean up and organize it.

Decide What Needs To Be On It

Today’s bookshelf contains everything from books and DVDs to video games and knick knacks. I’ve been known to throw board games, boxes filled with stuff and anything else I can’t seem to find a spot for in the moment. It looks like a disaster area and forget trying to find something because there is no rhyme or reason.

Before you begin organizing, decide what needs to be on it. Do you have enough books to fill an entire bookshelf? Do you want it to be entertainment based? Anything that doesn’t fit with what you want should be removed. You can also choose to keep it as a catchall, but you still have to organize it.

Keep Like With Like

The hodge podge bookshelf is not an organized bookshelf. Start by grouping everything together, so books should be with books, DVDs with DVDs, etc. It’s important that if you are looking for something specific that you know where to go. The only exception is if you have figurines or knick knacks included. These can be spaced out throughout the bookshelf to act as dividers and add to the aesthetic.

Organize

This is where you can let your imagination soar. You can organize things any way you want. All that matters is that it’s something you’ll easily remember. You can organize by alphabet, genre, size or anything you like. If you have a large number of small items, then consider placing them into a nice decorative box to save space.

However you decide to finally organize it, the end result it a much cleaner and saner bookshelf. It looks great and you can find anything you want with a quick glance. For more information about Illinois Valley Clean Team Inc., explore our website.

Buying A Vacuum Cleaner Doesn’t Have To Suck

February 21, 2017 by Illinois Valley Clean Team

choosing a vacuum cleanerYou use your vacuum cleaner a lot though the year and over time, you’ll notice the suction isn’t as strong, the filtration isn’t working or it’s just become more of a pain than it’s worth. When this happens, it’s time to get a new one. With so many to choose from, it’s easy to get frustrated, but you do not want to rush buying a new vacuum cleaner.

Price

Before you even start looking for a vacuum cleaner, you need to decide on a budget. Do you want something simple and inexpensive or are you ready to go all out on that Dyson Cyclone you keep seeing commercials about? One thing to remember is just because something is expensive doesn’t make it the best and just because something is cheap doesn’t make it bad. Odds are if you’re looking for a bargain basement vacuum it’s not going to have all the bells and whistles of the more expensive brands and it may not have longevity. You’ll have to decide what’s most important to you and do research on the different brands available.

Canister or Upright

Vacuums come in two types: canister and upright. Upright vacuum cleaners tend to be lighter and have the motors attached to the main body. They also usually have rotating brushes that help get dirt from thick carpeted area. This is the most common type used today, but canister vacuums are making a comeback. With a canister vacuum, the motor and the storage unit is contained in one area and the head is attached to a long hose. The biggest benefit is these tend to be more powerful since the motor doesn’t have to me compact. The vacuum head is also easier to maneuver on stairs, etc. The biggest downside is it’s heavier and you have to bend over most of the time, which can lead to back pain.

Bagged or No Bag

Bagged vacuums can be a hassle. You have to keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t get too full. You have to take out the bag and replace it with a new one. You have to keep buying new bags. Ugh! Why would anyone want a bagged vacuum cleaner? It’s simply better. The whole point of a vacuum cleaner is to suck up dust and dirt, but when you empty a bagless vacuum, dust and dirt fly right out of it again. Bagged vacuums are cleaner and prevent dust and dirt from escaping. What’s nice about bagless vacuum cleaners is the convenience. Empty the bin and you’re done. Unless you are very careful, some of the dust and dirt will escape when dumping, but you’ll have to decide if it’s worth buying a bagged vacuum instead.

If you’re tired of vacuuming, then why not let us do all the dirty work. Contact IV Clean Team Inc. today and get a free quote.

The Sick Kit: Prepare For The Worst And Hope For The Best

February 10, 2017 by Illinois Valley Clean Team

The Sick Kit Illinois Valley Clean TeamYou probably have a first aid kit ready to go in case of cuts or bruises, but everyone is caught by surprise when it comes to illness. A sick kit keeps you from scrambling at 9 p.m. trying to find a place that’s open where you can get children’s fever medications. Illnesses happen and when you have children in school it’s seemingly never-ending.

Get a Proper Container

I’ve seen people use everything from small plastic totes to cute baskets to contain their sick kit. What’s great about a sick kit is that it doesn’t matter what the container is as long as it contains everything you need. Since many of the items are liquid based, it’s a good idea to choose a container that’s easy to clean in case medicine spills. If you have multiple children or children of different ages, then you might want to separate them into different sick kits.

Stock up on meds

Perhaps the most important part of the sick kit is it contains a variety of medications to deal with a variety of illnesses. The kit should contain age appropriate fever and pain medications such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen. If your child is old enough, cold and flu medicine, cough drops and nausea medication. Basically, think of everything that can go wrong and stock up on its medicine. Keep it in the sick kit for easy access. If you end up using all of medicine, replenish it immediately. A sick kit isn’t much use if you’re out of the medications you need.

It’s also important to keep a box of antiseptic wipes to wipe down everything and gloves to keep you as far from sickness as possible. You can also include homeopathic cures such as Epsom salts and essential oils.

Odds and Ends

A sick kit is more than just medicine. It’s supposed to cover just about everything. Keep it stocked with healthy and easily digestible snacks such as graham crackers and apple sauce. You can include a bottle of water or even some packets of tea to brew up. It’s absolutely essential to include some chicken bouillon or chicken soup. One thing people never think about is fun activities for when kids are sick. Why not include some coloring books and crayons or a few movies. It doesn’t have to be extravagant, just something that keeps them occupied and their mind off being sick.

Illinois Valley Clean Team knows that sickness always hits at the worst possible times. If you’ve got your hands full with a house full of sick children or just need a break from cleaning, then contact us for a free quote.

Is it time for a new mattress?

February 10, 2017 by Illinois Valley Clean Team

need a new mattressGenerally, people know when a piece of furniture has reached its end stage. Your favorite chair starts getting a hole or two or the table legs of the coffee table start spreading apart. You sigh and start looking for new furniture, but one place you hardly think about is the mattress. You sleep on it every night, but even when its years past its prime, people still sleep on it. Is it time for you to get a new mattress?

Quality of Sleep

If you want to function at full capacity, then your body needs good sleep. If you’re waking up again and again in the night because you’re uncomfortable or if you sleep all night, but still feel tired in the morning, then your mattress probably needs the old heave ho. The body needs deep sleep and an old mattress isn’t giving you the comfort needed to reach that state. Instead, you’re tossing and turning when you should be dreaming.

Age

It’s not easy getting older and that goes double for a mattress. Your average mattress can last about 8-10 years, but if it gets abuse…such as children jumping up and down on it…then it may need to be replaced sooner. Over time, the mattress loses support, and you might see dips and sags where you normally sleep. Without that support, your sleep is compromised. If your mattress has survived through two presidencies, then it’s time to start looking for something new.

Pain

We all have those days when we wake up and our back hurts. We shrug it off as sleeping in a bad position and go on with our day. Soon, those occasional days become more frequent and eventually it’s every night. If you wake up with aches and pains that disappear once you’re up and out of bed, then you need a new mattress. The pain is caused by a lack of support and your body is contorted into a painful position. It may feel fine when you go to sleep, but after several hours of being in the same spot, it can take a toll.

How do you feel when you wake up every morning? If you need a little extra rest, then contact Illinois Valley Clean Team Inc. and let us do the cleaning so you can get forty winks. Contact us today for a quote.
